Happy Independence! What common ideals will move our country forward? Our national ethos is up for grabs: May we direct it to the goals of our founding and realize our freedom in our common destiny.
Along with the above from “America the Beautiful,” here’s a quote from Fr. Luigi Giussani for reflection. Besides founding the movement of Communion and Liberation, Fr. Giussani was a keen scholar of American theology:
“Complete self-fulfillment, this is freedom. Freedom, for the human being, is the possibility, the capacity, the responsibility to be fulfilled, that is to say to reach and face one’s destiny: it is the total aspiration for destiny. Thus freedom is the experience of the truth of ourselves.” The Religious Sense, Chapter 8.
